Retail

VM Number works well for retail when you sell physical goods and want a simple way for customers to pay with Vipps or MobilePay—without a card reader. You can use shopping basket for fixed product prices or open amount when the total varies (e.g. at a market or when rounding).

When VM Number fits retail

  • Small shops and kiosks — A short product list or a few key items; the customer selects and pays in the app.
  • Market stalls and pop-ups — Variable amounts or a small catalogue; your VM Number on a sign or sticker is enough.
  • Counters and takeaways — Fixed menu or price list in the app; the customer pays the total without handing over a card.
  • Pay-what-you-want or rounding — Open amount so the customer can enter the sum (e.g. round up for charity).

No extra hardware is required—just your VM Number and the customer's phone.

Using shopping basket in retail

If you have a fixed set of products and prices (e.g. a few bestsellers or a small range):

  1. Set up your products and prices in your VM Number catalogue.
  2. Display your VM Number (and optionally a QR code) at the counter or on the stall.
  3. The customer opens the app, enters your number, selects the items they want, and pays the total.

Keep product names short and clear so they're easy to read in the app. Update the list when you add or remove items or change prices.

Using open amount in retail

If the total changes every time (e.g. by weight, custom orders, or haggling):

  1. Tell or show the customer the amount (on a receipt, screen, or verbally).
  2. Give them your VM Number (and a reference if it helps, e.g. "Order #12").
  3. They enter the amount in the app and pay.

Use a reference when you have many orders so you can match payments to the right sale.

Best practices for retail

  • Put your VM Number where customers pay — On the counter, on a sign, or on receipts so they can pay quickly.
  • Keep the product list focused — In basket mode, show the items people actually buy via VM Number; long lists can be harder to use.
  • Train staff — Make sure they know the VM Number and when to use basket vs open amount.
