What is VM Number?¶
VM Number is a Vipps MobilePay payment service that gives you a dedicated payment number. Customers use this number in the Vipps or MobilePay app to pay you—no card reader or separate terminal needed. You can use it in two ways: open amount (the customer enters the amount) or shopping basket (the customer selects from your products with fixed prices).
Do I need special hardware?¶
No. Customers pay with their phone using the Vipps or MobilePay app. You only need to display your VM Number (and, for open amount, communicate the amount). No extra hardware is required at the point of sale.
What's the difference between open amount and shopping basket?¶
- Open amount — The customer types in the amount to pay. You use it when the total varies (e.g. tips, donations, or when you tell them the amount).
- Shopping basket — You define a list of products with prices. The customer picks items in the app and pays the total. You use it when you have fixed prices (e.g. menus, price lists, tickets).
How do I get a VM Number?¶
Order VM Number in the business portal, the same way you order other Vipps MobilePay products (e.g. Open amount or Shopping basket). Where should I show my VM Number?¶
Show it wherever the customer pays: at the counter, on receipts, on table tents or posters, or on your website if you direct people to pay by number. The goal is to make it easy for the customer to find and use your number without asking.
Can I use a QR code?¶
Yes. In the business portal, you can create a QR code that links to your VM Number so customers can scan and pay without typing. Place the QR code where it's easy to scan and doesn't block others.
How do I update my product list (Shopping basket)?¶
Product names and prices are managed in the business portal. Update the list when your offerings or prices change so customers always see the correct options and totals.
What if the customer enters the wrong amount (open amount)?¶
In open amount mode, the customer enters the amount. If a wrong payment happens, follow your usual process and the Help Center for disputes or refunds.
Is VM Number available in my country?¶
VM Number products are available in Norway, Denmark, and Finland. Availability depends on your merchant type and agreement. Check the developer documentation and business setup for your country and account type.
