How It Works

VM Number gives you a dedicated payment number that your customers use to pay you via the Vipps or MobilePay app. The flow is the same whether you use open amount or shopping basket: the customer searches for your business or enters your VM Number, then enters or selects what to pay for and confirms in the app.

High-level flow

  1. You share your VM Number — Display it at the counter, on receipts, in your shop window, or wherever customers need to pay.
  2. The customer opens the app — They open Vipps or MobilePay and search for your business or enter your VM Number (or scan a QR code linking to it).
  3. Amount, basket, or request — Depending on your setup:
  4. Open amount: The customer types in the amount to pay.
  5. Shopping basket: The customer sees your products or menu and selects what they want; the total is calculated automatically.
  6. Payment Request: You send a request to the customer's app (using their phone number); they receive it and pay in one tap. Used for online or remote sales.
  7. Payment is confirmed — The customer confirms in the app. You receive the payment according to your agreement with Vipps MobilePay.

No extra hardware is required at the point of sale—just your VM Number and the customer's phone.

Modes and Payment Request

You must create a different VM Number for open amount and shopping basket:

  • Use open amount for variable payments (e.g. tips, donations, or "pay what you want").
  • Use shopping basket for fixed prices (e.g. menu items, products, or tickets).

Payment Request is a separate flow for online or remote sales: you send a request directly to the customer in the app (using their phone number). They get the request in Vipps or MobilePay and pay in one tap. See Payment Request for when and how to use it.

Your account and configuration determine which options are available. For details, see Open amount, Shopping basket, and Payment Request.

What your customer sees

From the customer's perspective, paying with VM Number is the same as other in-app payments: they open Vipps or MobilePay, search for your business or enter your number, see the amount or basket, and confirm. The experience is consistent across merchants, which helps build trust and reduces friction.
